The ORCA project investigates electrical axles for trucks due to the potential to improve the total cost of ownership (TCO). In the ORCA solution improvement of the TCO is accomplished by accommodating an electrical axle in addition to a parallel hybrid powertrain which will enable to adapt vehicles for different transport mission use cases.

The electrical axle will improve traction and vehicle stability as well will increase brake energy recovery and additional electric propulsion. The concept is modular and has the potential to keep the cost low. The electrical axle will be integrated to the pusher axle of the ORCA Volvo demonstrator.
