In order to achieve maximum fuel reduction performance, HEVs demand a dedicated Energy Management Strategy (EMS). In the ORCA project, a toolbox has been developed by TNO that can automatically generate an energy management strategy for various hybrid electric vehicles topologies. The energy management strategy is modular with a separate optimization module for each subsystem. Each optimization module can therefore easily take key parameter variations into account, e.g. SoC, SoH and temperature of the RESS technology, emissions and thermal dynamics of the ICE, thermal dynamics of the Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system and thermal comfort of the passengers. It also incorporates the transport assignment and route recognition to achieve a minimum TCO for a certain mission.
